- Adam Lambert vs. David Archuleta. Who wins the battle of arguably American Idol's two best ever?
With another exciting year of American Idol upon us, the question is not who will win, but who won't win. The last two seasons of television's No. 1 show ended with shocking upsets. Lambert and Archuleta both were favored to win but were stunned when Kris Allen and David Cook took home the Idol crown. Perhaps fans assumed Lambert and Archuleta were sure-fire winners and didn't vote? In the end, it largely didn't matter.
Both Lambert and "Archie" have enjoyed great success, despite placing second.
Ironically, Lambert and Archuleta have some startling similarities, both in style and performance. Let's take a closer look at their careers, Idol milestones and speculate about who is the best of the best who didn't win?
The Auditions Both Lambert and Archuleta emerged as Idol contenders from Day One. Lambert's rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody" was flawless, as was Archuleta's "Waiting on the World to Change." The judges were more impressed with Archuleta than Lambert, who Cowell noted seemed "too theatrical." Lambert: Bohemian Rhapsody Archuleta: Waiting on the World to Change
Before They Were Stars Arsenio Hall introduces Archuleta on an episode of CBS's primetime "Star Search." A pre-teen Archuleta brought the house down with his version of "Falling," by Alicia Keys. Lambert has many pre-Idol performances, but this one where he sings the 4 Non Blondes classic, "What's Up," is fantastic, even if he appears to be a bit out of sorts during the performance. Tender Moment Lambert first convinced Simon Cowell that he could be a contender for the Idol crown with his performance of "Tracks of My Tears." Like a good chameleon, Lambert overhauled his look for this performance, looking very mainstream. Archuleta's "Love Me Tender," had fans in tears. It was another impressive moment for the teen-ager. The Finale By the time the finale came, fans were expecting blow-away performances akin to the ones Lambert and Archuleta had consistently demonstrated throughout the season. Lambert and Archuleta didn't disappoint. In some notes, their voices sound remarkably similar. Lambert: Mad World Archuleta: Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me
Handling Defeat Lambert and Archuleta both took defeat well. It almost appeared as though they were expecting it. By the look on his face, Kris Allen clearly thought Lambert was going to win, and David Cook was overwhelmed by his triumph over Archuleta Lambert: Lambert's loss Archuleta: Archuleta heartbreak
Post Idol Music videos don't mean much these days; the evolution of youtube means anyone can be a star at any time, even with poor production values. But Lambert and Archuleta both made strong statements about the direction of their careers with their debut music videos, (even if Archuleta, curiously keeps a safe distance from the rest of actors in his video).
