The best and the brightest in the world of music came out for the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards Sunday night.
While other awards shows draw a more demure crowd, the Grammys are a jovial affair and that attitude was reflected in the bold choices that littered the red carpet.
Several artists stepped it up for the event, including "TiK ToK" singer Kesha. The emerging pop star, who usually looks a mess and has described her own style as "garbage chic," actually cleaned up nicely in a thigh-length gold fringe gown with a flash of silver eye shadow.
Nicole Kidman, who attended the show on the arm of her husband Keith Urban, nailed it in a black halter gown with a ruffled neckline that showed off her fit frame.
Another beauty in black was "Glee’s" Lea Michelle, who wore a one-shoulder black mini-dress with feather-like ruffles along the bottom.
But many showed up in attire that was only OK, often just one beat away from the perfect look.
Just like host Stephen Colbert stated at the start of the show, Taylor Swift looked like a "princess" in a deep blue floor-length gown that was glamorous but not earth-shattering. Her efforts to remain age-appropriate are worthy, but it’d be nice to see her try a more dangerous look.
Adam Lambert, an artist known for being over-the-top, hit the right notes with slim black trousers and a sequined jacket that remained true to his style. He suffered in the tie department, though, with an elongated bow tie that looked like he stole it from Jack Skellington’s closet.
Lady Gaga looked fierce as usual in a custom Armani Prive gown that looked more like a piece of art than a dress. It would have been better complimented with less makeup and minus the yellow hair extensions, but even so, her look was still the talk of the night.
Beyonce looked like she left Sasha Fierce at home, showing up in a pale pink gown that looked like a fancy track jacket with a skirt attached.
She did turn things around later in the night, wearing a flattering corseted black minidress for her performance early in the evening.
Rhianna’s dress, a white concoction by Elie Saab, would’ve been a hit had it not been for the neckpiece, which looked like a white feather boa. The back of the gown was gorgeous, and the draping on the sides highlighted her curves perfectly.
Katy Perry, who posted on her Twitter that her look was "channeling Indian Betty Paige princess," failed to impress in a nude and gold-embellished Zac Posen gown.
Heidi Klum, whose dress was coincidentally in the same color scheme as Perry’s, also came up short in a thigh-length, long-sleeve gown in a pattern that suggested Klum was having a Chico’s kind of day.
But no one individual failed as much as singer Ciara, who showed up on the red carpet in what was essentially a leotard under a bedazzled lace jumpsuit.
While it’s true that her slicked-back hair was just as appalling as her outfit, it’s hard to say that any hairstyle could have saved her.
The men of the evening provided a mix of good and bad, with Ne-Yo continuing to pave the way for how a young male artist should dress at awards shows.
Usher tried to get the same classy effect in an Armani suit paired with a plaid undershirt, but he looked more suited for the Kentucky Derby than a major award show.
With the exception of a few definite hits, the Grammys were littered with fashion that was mediocre. Hopefully the stars will try and step up their game at the rest of this season’s honorary gatherings.
