In several interviews he makes it clear that even though he didn't go to Hebrew school and wasn't bar-mitzvah'd, he IS Jewish, relates to the Jewish religion and isn't happy with people who send him Christian (or any other religious) representations. Interest in other religions and philosophies (the tat, for example) doesn't change that, IMHO.
Having said that, I totally agree with your last comments about who he is. "With his positive outlook and overall spirituality, he sets a high standard in his relationship with his fellow humans. Can we do any worse?"
