Those of us who decline to watch "American Idol" after the first couple of tryout episodes, and who have little to no use for adult contemporary and mainstream pop radio, have only a passing familiarity with Adam Lambert, one of the Fox television show's most popular losers.
Lambert fell to Kris Allen in a controversial "Idol" season eight finale, but his popularity was already set among many of that program's fans. The Roanoke Times' one-time "American Idol" specialist, Sharla Bardin, wrote at the time that the result was a "stunner."
"I am a Kris fan, but I also believe that Adam is going to just explode on the music scene," she wrote. "We haven't seen the last of our guy in guyliner. He's got the chops, the creativity and the chutzpah to really carve out a nice career." - Quote :
How Adam Lambert's career will ultimately play out is an open question. The "American Idol" season eight star can sing, no doubt about it. He brings strong stage persona, a professional backing band, sharp and flexible dancers and an at-times intense stage show.
His songs, though, are another matter. To this point, he hasn't got an original that matches what he is able to do onstage -- not that it mattered even a little to an audience of 1,987 in the 2,100-capacity Roanoke Performing Arts Theatre on Thursday night.
To this nearly sold-out crowd, the man was a glam-rock god, and their cheers were sometimes louder than Lambert and his four-piece band. | |
