- The moment “Top Ten Things to Know About Adam Lambert” appeared on the blog Juneau and Xena’s Salon, it started receiving hits from hundreds of readers an hour. Designed to enlighten those who are still in the dark about the singer -- his talents, his personality and his versatility as an entertainer -- this concise backgrounder has clearly struck many of Lambert’s fans as a useful vehicle for spreading the word about their Idol.
While Lambert recently surpassed Jordin Sparks as the American Idol alumnus with the largest number of Twitter followers (over 550,000 at last count), he is still a newcomer and not widely known beyond the confines of his notably devoted fan base. “We discovered there is no single document that explains his powerful appeal, because information is scattered and locating it is haphazard,” explained blogger Katherine Hollinsworth, known online as Xena Princess Warrior. “We recognized a gap and undertook to provide a trim piece to share with everyone.”
The Salon came up with this Top 10 list of Adam Lambert’s attributes. A more complete version with links is available on the Salon's web site:
1. He is one of the best singers in rock/popular music, combining a gorgeous tone with sensitive phrasing and expression. 2. He is a complete entertainer – singer, dancer, actor – with a commanding stage presence and charisma that makes his live performances electrifying. 3. He is already enjoying significant commercial success. Adam’s For Your Entertainment debuted in November 2009 as the top-selling U.S. CD, with nearly 200,000 units sold in the first week, and surpassing one million in worldwide sales this July. 4. He spans musical genres, from Broadway and Rat Pack to hard rock and electro-pop, and can inhabit iconic songs with utter conviction. His audacious song choices on American Idol blew away many observers. 5. He appeals to an extraordinary range of fans across generational, political, ethnic and national boundaries. He is a synthesizer and unifying artist, whose music draws from multiple sources and attracts listeners with diverse tastes through his singularly beautiful voice and emotional connection to each song. 6. He is a boundary-smashing sex symbol, appealing to women and men, straight, gay and bisexual. He may be the first openly gay popular artist whom women unabashedly adore anyway and consider one of the sexiest men alive. 7. He is a style icon. Fans and style-makers pay close attention to his fashion choices and beauty. He is often the subject of print and online fashion and beauty shoots. 8. He is articulate and intelligent. In interview after interview, he is disarmingly open, self-aware, thoughtful and funny. He displays considerable business savvy and is deeply engaged in every aspect of his recordings and shows, from creative design to production. 9. He is considerate, polite and humble. As a competitor on American Idol, he was one of the few who unfailingly thanked the band and backup singers after every performance. Fellow Idol contestants credited Adam with helping them. Despite his meteoric rise, he retains a feeling of innocence, wonder and gratitude. 10. He is extremely loyal to his family, friends and fans. He is close to his parents and generous towards his friends, many of whom are talented, struggling artists. He often thanks his fans, stands up for them at times, and has created an intense connection with them through web chats, Twitter and special videos.
Hollinsworth and her co-author, Juneau Underwood, have documented the phenomenon of social media and fan subcultures in their book On the Meaning of Adam Lambert, available online and through Amazon. They also host a weekly BlogTalkRadio show at 10:00-11:00PM (Eastern Time) Wednesday. This week they will discuss the Top 10 list and invite listeners from around the world to share stories about how they have dealt with friends and family who are misinformed or simply do not “get” their fan obsession. http://www.prweb.com/releases/2010/08/prweb4351174.htm | |
