- Adam Lambert Sets His Sights on #14 and Inches Closer to Platinum
Adam Lambert, on the back of his Glam Nation Tour and strong radio and video support for his single, "If I Had You," has chalked up another 5,000 in sales for his debut album, "For Your Entertainment" and pushing him into the #15 spot on the all-time American Idol alumni album sales list. According to Idol Chatter, which rounds off the numbers to the nearest thousand in sales, Adam Lambert placed third (a virtual tie for second due to the rounding) behind American Idol album sales juggernauts Daughtry and Carrie Underwood, whose albums remained on the Billboard 200 inside the Top 100. "For Your Entertainment" has now sold 691,000 copies in the United States and currently rests in the #105 spot on the Billboard 200, eleven slots behind Daughtry's "Leave This Town."
Last week, Adam Lambert sold 5,000 copies of "For Your Entertainment" to pull within 1,000 copies of Elliott Yamin, the American Idol Season 5 third-place finisher. Lambert also announced last week that total worldwide sales for his debut album had surpassed 1 million copies. This past week, he matched last week's total and slipped ahead of Yamin. And with his current hit song, "If I Had You," creeping up the Billboard Hot 100 chart, plus the continued strong sales and airplay of "Whataya Want From Me," it looks as if the album could remain a strong seller for quite some time.
Lambert also got some help from talk show exposure this week, according to his official website. He appeared on Ryan Seacrest's radio show in Los Angeles Tuesday and on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" (a repeat) on Wednesday.
And the self-described glam rocker shows no signs of slowing down. He announced that he was working on a new album awhile back and discussed writing it on Seacrest's show. It is slated for release sometime in 2011.
The Glam Nation Tour takes the American Idol Season 8 runner-up back home to San Diego at the end of July.
Who is next on the list for Adam Lambert to overtake? Bo Bice, Carrie Underwood's rival for the top spot during Season 4 of American Idol, currently sits at #14 in all-time record sales with 741,000. His latest CD, "3," was released in May and has seen dismal sales, thus far only generating 3,000 sales.
So the question does not seem to be "if" Adam Lambert will take the #14 slot but "when." With 50,000 copies to go (barring any great leap in sales from Bo Bice's three albums), it is safe to say that Lambert could overtake the southern rocker in as little as 11 weeks but, more realistically, it will probably take the glam rocker at least four more months (or more) to assume the higher position. A few more weeks of steady sales afterward and he could be in the #13 position. Taylor Hicks, the Season 5 winner, sits in that position with 753,000 copies of his three albums sold.
It isn't difficult to believe that Adam Lambert could garner a platinum album before his second offering is released. If "For Your Entertainment" attains a million in sales, he would, according to the current list, break the Top 10 on the American Idol best sellers list. But #10 is currently held by David Archuleta, the American Idol Season 7 runner-up, who just released his new single from his third album, which is scheduled to drop on September 14. His first two CDs have sold nearly 1 million copies combined.
Lambert will most likely have to settle for #11 until his second album hits the stores...
