Adam Lambert is obviously a much in-demand celebrity, so by this point we're all used to seeing him in "on" mode: vamping it up in music videos, strutting the red carpet, posing on the covers of glossies, serving as ET's Grammy fashion correspondent, granting formal interviews to Oprah and Barbara, etc. This is why Reality Rocks was so surprised and delighted to catch him during some of his all-too-rare downtime, on the Monday afternoon after his big blowout Grammys/birthday weekend, just chilling on a front porch outside a secret Hollywood location after one of his many photo shoots.
Because sometimes the laid-back, lo-fi approach is the best way to really get the good interview info: just a simple man, a gazebo, a handheld flipcam, an L.A. sunset, and a whole lot of freeform rambling about what matters most, music.
In part 1 of Adam's front porch chat, we talk a little bit about his influence on American Idol season 9 and his depiction in the media (which sadly rarely actually focuses on what he's doing musically) before getting into the fun stuff: his superstar collaborations with the likes of Muse, Lady Gaga, and Rivers Cuomo; how he maintained his artistic vision during the making of his album For Your Entertainment, and what really happened that fateful night at Burning Man. - Quote :
Adam Lambert certainly is one chatty guy...which makes him an interviewer's dream, of course, since with him there's always a lot to talk about. In fact, part 2 of Reality Rocks' "front porch" interview--which took place on a veranda outside a Hollywood studio at dusk--could have even gone on longer, if it hadn't been for the fact that we were quickly losing all natural light, and the dimly illuminated sunset interview was kind of starting to look like a seance.
At one point Adam amusingly semi-apologized for his loquaciousness (it was quite all right, seriously), and said, "You'll probably edit this down." Um, nah. It was all good stuff, and low-key moments like this are all too rare with Adam nowadays. So why not put up the whole conversation, uncut and unguarded?
During part 2 of our interview, we covered my personal favorite song on Adam's album, "Music Again" (penned by Justins Hawkins of the Darkness); rumors about another Justin (Timberlake, that is); his dream collaborations; his upcoming remixes EP; and why/how he's tried to strike a balance between electro and rock 'n' roll in his music, while staying true to himself.
If you're already a fan of Lambert's music, this interview should offer some great insight into Adam the artist. And if you're not a fan, this interview just might make you one:
