- Ryan Tedder, lead singer and producer of the multi-platinum selling band OneRepublic spent this morning waking up to having found out that yesterday that he was nominated for two Grammy Awards. The categories are for Record of the Year for Beyonce’s mega-hit “Halo,” which Tedder co-wrote and produced, and for his work with Beyonce’s I Am…Sasha Fierce.
Two years ago, Tedder’s band OneRepublic received accolades for their debut release Dreaming Out Loud, which featured the hit single “Apologize” that sold ten million copies. Last year, he was nominated for Grammy Awards in the category of Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for that track. He was also nominated for Record of the Year for Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love,” a track Tedder produced, co-wrote and engineered.
The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards will be held on “Grammy Sunday,” January 31, 2010 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
In addition to his work with Beyonce, Tedder has worked with other artists that include Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson, Natasha Bedingfield, Jordan Sparks, Adam Lambert, T.I., and Jennifer Lopez.
Tedder’s Denver-based band OneRepublic recently released their current album Waking Up, their second release on Mosley/Interscope Records.
Tedder, who is the bands’ front man and lead vocalist, also adds guitar and piano to the band, which is comprised of Brent Kutzle on bass and cello, drummer Eddie Fisher, Drew Brown on guitar, Zach Filkins on guitar and back-up vocals.
Waking Up’s opening track, “Made For You,” was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, as were the album’s tracks “Fear” and “All This Time.”
The single from the new album is “All The Right Moves.”
The album’s song “Secrets” is an accessible track that is as refined as works on their previous disc.
“Everbody Loves Me” is a departure from other tracks on the album, and it is here that Tedder cuts loose a little bit more than on the rest of the album.
The ballad “Missing Persons” has alluring keyboards, and is one of the songs on the album that best showcase’s Tedder’s voice.
The mellow “Good Life” could serve as contender for the band’s next single, with its lyrical references to New York and Los Angeles.
“All This Time,” with its ambient intro and keyboard arrangements, is one of the best samples of Tedder’s songwriting on the album. “I’m lucky to love something that loves me,” he sings, a line that could likely serve as a reference to Tedder’s heavily requited relationship he shares with his career, audience and his musical peers.
On the track “Fear,” strings were provided by the London Studio Orchestra.
The album’s title track with its interesting surprise keyboard intro, as well as more strings from the London Studio Orchestra, has the feel of a song that could have been written for Irish rockers U2.
“Marching On” again proves that OneNation is not trying to imitate their previous album.
The tender track “Lullaby,” a lyrical and musical contrast to Metallica’s “Sandman,” has Tedder singing about angels.
Given the offerings on their second album, it is doubtful that the OneNation will experience a sophomore jinx with the tracks on Waking Up.
