Quote :
Adam Lambert is about to begin his Glam Nation Tour. Seventy venues are quickly selling out across the nation and then he is on to Europe. Lambert's tour promises to be the beginning of his legend. Adam has created a
"kitschy, glam, voodoo, crystal ball, and black magic" theme visually inspired by turn-of-the-century New Orleans. The real magic will occur mid show when Lambert has planed an acoustic section that he said "will vary from night to night, week to week". It will be here that he can spontaneously create those moments that are unforgettable as he did at Fantasy Springs with his bluesy version of "Whole Lotta Love". Lambert's powerhouse vocals, artistic visions and electrifying stage presence are unmatchable. Many predict that he will emerge from the tour securely established as the chart topping international star that Simon predicted.
Lambert successfully launched his career with the American Idol platform but he has left destruction in his wake. It is not just that Season 9's lackluster performers seemed dull compared to him, the real impact is that millions of people will just not get over the fact that American Idol failed to address the flawed voting system. Many correctly believe that Adam Lambert and now Crystal Bowersox would have won in a fair vote.
Last year the vote numbers were staggering. During the final three round with Danny, Adam and Kris competing 88 million votes were announced. This year the top three contestants Crystal, Casey and Lee brought in 47 million votes. The votes were down by a stunning 41 million for the final three.
On the night of the final last year between Adam and Kris Ryan Seacrest announced that there were just under 100 million votes. This year American Idol did not announce a vote total but merely stated that Lee had a 2% margin of victory over Crystal. Last year they never mentioned a margin of victory between Adam and Kris. What we can reference from last year and this year are the Dialidol numbers. Last year Dialidol claimed that they received close to 759,000 votes for the final between Adam and Kris and this year only about 276,000 for the final between Crystal and Lee. I rounded off both figures, but the totals represent a staggering drop in votes.
Part of the drastic drop off in votes can easily be attributed to the Season 8 Arkansas power texting. Credible evidence supports the fact that an organized group of voters were assisted by a rogue AT&T executive in a stadium full of people at the University of Central Arkansas. Millions of votes were generated there week after week, not just during the final, changing the outcome of Season 8.
This year the same flawed system of voting combined with the judging created different problems. The judges started off each trying to out Simon Simon. They were cut throat. I believe they destroyed the confidence of some of the singers such as Katie Stevens, Casey James, Lacey Brown, Siobhan Magnus and Lilly Scott. Was it in hopes of moving up to Simon's salary next year that they brought out such unprecedented snarkiness? I have never seen the contestants more confused about what they were expected to deliver.
Siobhan unfortunately decided that she was Adam Lambert. Her quest for the title ended on the night that Aaron Kelly's telephone number mistakenly appeared on a Facebook page that many fans thought was her official page. With the myriad of voting problems the only change from Season 8 is that the voice no longer thanks you for voting for a particular contestant but just thanks you for voting. This change was how American Idol solved the problem of voters complaining about being thanked for voting for the wrong person when they knew they dialed the right number. Because of this change Siobhan's voters were not alerted to the mistake. Many of Siobhan's fans announced that they would not vote again.
Throughout the season Crystal remained constant. She was the singer who could stay on key and deliver an authentic performance. Crystal was high profile because of her talent, her medical issues and because it was reported that Ryan talked her out of leaving the show. Crystal denied this incident. Did American Idol not want a winner with issues? Although Crystal was the frontrunner in the beginning it became obvious that the judges started promoting Lee as a contender. Casey would have been my choice because he is obviously more attractive and is an excellent musician.
Lee nonetheless became the anointed one. Lee's Google Trends jumped the night he sang Hallelujah with the gospel choir. The momentum from the judge's praise that night overtook Crystal. Actually hitting the right notes is evidently no longer a requirement to win on American Idol. Crystal lost because of the judge's manipulation and because of the ability of text voters to cast thousands of votes each.
Both "Vote Fair" and a survey conducted by Media Curve called "Idol Democracy" concluded that Crystal should have won in a fair one person, one vote system. That being said it would by no means have been an overwhelming landslide victory like Adam would have had in a fair vote. Nor in Crystal's case was there obvious cheating involved.
Lee is reaping the benefit of the winners bump in popularity and Lee's initial sales are higher than Crystals, but in the end I believe it will be Crystal who has the bigger career.
This was a season in which American Idol could have set things right, instead they made things worse. They could have changed their voting system to one like "Dancing With the Stars". Unlimited voting creates an unfair undemocratic result. American Idol should also stop using the judges to manipulate the vote by giving undo praise or criticism. American Idol should have realized that when the biggest star they ever discovered did not win that they would lose their credibility both here and abroad. Last year Adam Lambert should have won. This year Crystal Bowersox should have won. How many people will not vote next year?
