- Adam Lambert can rock it harder than Chinese algebra. His debut album, For Your Entertainment, is a brilliant piece that blends energetic pop tracks, edgy lyrics, hip hop beats and soulful melody.
If you're expecting to hear yet another wholesome, manufactured album with upbeat tracks about falling in love, holding hands and going to the club, you've got another thing coming. Above all things, For Your Entertainment is an intelligent, energetic, versatile, and poetic take on the human experience.
This album draws influences from dance, techno, alternative rock and other genres that give us a smattering of melodies that show off Lambert's poetic capability, vocal range, and versatility. From beginning to end, Lambert transports us through a melodic landscape of hills and valleys, letting us know that he has arrived and is here to stay.
The beats and lyrics of the album's title track, “For Your Entertainment” are enough to get you ready for a pants off dance off. Telling a story of seduction, this song pulls us into the album with a wry smile—and we aren't objecting. The vocals are smooth, the lyrics have a carefree, sexy attitude, and the companion music brings the song full circle.
Lambert's take on Lady Gaga's “Fever” is also pretty fantastic. Carrying through with the strong vocals, mixing, and melody that we see in “For Your Entertainment”, this song can give you that same thrill you get when you're plastered against a wall during a hot make out session. With its dance and rock beats, “Fever” gives you a true sampling of Lambert’s energy, bravado and ability to carry out a musical vision.
The slower tracks on the album are another showcase of how well Lambert can shape-shift between genres and move us through some of the darkest valleys. In songs like “Broken Open” and “Sleepwalker” Lambert’s use of slow trance beats and melodic vocals resonate like the voice of a siren leading a ship astray.
Overall, For Your Entertainment is an excellent deviation from the norm. It brings us soul and attitude, and it also throws us into the dialectic, or the dialogue of being. Stay tuned, because Adam Lambert is probably set to give us more—with gusto. http://www.luminomagazine.com/mw/content/view/3016/27 | |
