- Yesterday articles popped up all over the Internet claiming that American Idol fans want Quincy Jones to replace Simon Cowell as the new
American Idol judge. As someone who follows pop culture closely I thought that this was an odd choice. There is no doubt that the 77 - year old music legend has credentials. He is a conductor, record producer, musical arranger, film composer, television producer, and trumpeter. Jones has earned a record 79 Grammy Award nominations and went home with 27 Grammys. Jones is the producer of Michael Jackson's Thriller album that sold over 110 million copies worldwide. It is one thing to be accomplished in the music industry and another to be able to garner a weekly viewing audience on a reality show.
"TV Guide" conducted the survey. "TV Guide" claims that the choice of Jones represents the desire of American Idol viewers. No disrespect to Mr. Jones or "TV Guide", but I seriously doubt that the demographic that voted in the "TV Guide" survey is an accurate representation of a cross section of American Idol viewers. Other names that were mentioned were Adam Lambert, Howard Stern, Jamie Foxx, Tommy Mottola, Jimmy Lovine and Steve Lillywhite, who has launched an online campaign to land Simon's job, DJ Howard Stern, Guy Oseary, Ryan Seacrest and former judge Paula Abdul were all contenders. TV Guide might like to know that Adam Lambert's Google Trends are higher than any of the other possible replacements meaning that people are more interested in him. Lambert is a pop culture phenomenon. The Glamberts did not know of this survey or Adam would have won.
Simon has big shoes to fill. His replacement has to have the ability to evaluate talent and to deliver accurate commentary and it must be brutally honest. American Idol is the fairy tale and someone has to deliver the reality as Simon does. Adam Lambert masterfully filled those requirements during the week that he mentored the Season 9 contestants.
Some have suggested that Adam is too new in show business to be a serious contender. That is not true; Adam Lambert is a seasoned professional that has been singing since childhood. I am not arguing that this would be the right choice for Lambert, but if the choice was presented to him he has everything it takes to bring the excitement back to American Idol.
Lambert has the quick-witted intelligent observation, charm and personal magnetism that would bring back viewers every week. After all, it is a singing contest and Adam Lambert as one of the most powerful and artistically gifted singers in the world. Lambert knows about singing and putting on a show, either with lights and lasers or scaled back and intimate, Adam delivers. Anyone still doubting his ability need only listen to his recent performance in Zurich. Adam's acoustic rendition of "Sleepwalker" is a vocal masterpiece. If American Idol wants to be currant and fresh, they should look to the future, not the past. American Idol would be lucky to get Adam Lambert.
