- In the wake of the devastating earthquake last week that left Haiti in ruins, ET and The Red Cross are teaming up with the Hollywood community to lend support to the major crisis in Haiti and now best-selling singer Adam Lambert has come exclusively to the ET stage to help in the effort.
"The people of Haiti need your help," Lambert says. "The images are heartbreaking, the loss of life devastating, but tonight you can help the people of Haiti. Give whatever you can. Your contributions can help end the unimaginable suffering. Do something that will change a life, do something that will make a difference. Don't just let the images on television fade to black."
How you can help: Financial donations can be made at www.redcross.org, 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish) or mail your donation to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013 or to your local American Red Cross chapter. The public can also help by texting "Haiti" to 90999 to send a $10 donation to the Red Cross, through an effort backed by the U.S. State Department. Funds will go to support American Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is also helping to reconnect separated families within the country. They have established a special Web site, enabling persons in Haiti and abroad to search for and register the names of relatives missing since the earthquake: www.icrc.org/familylinks.
Hollywood is rallying to help Haiti in its time of need. With hundreds of thousands feared dead, George Clooney will host a telethon this Friday that will be broadcast by MTV, with Sting reportedly signed on. George's pals Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have pledged $1 million in humanitarian relief, in addition to a number of other celebrities who have offered their time and money. The Red Cross has also opened its warehouse in Panama to provide tarps, mosquito nets and cooking sets for thousands of families. They say that clothes are not helpful right now because there is nowhere to store them, no one to sort them, and it would be difficult to transport the items to Haiti.
On partnering with ET, Julie Whitmer, Director Celebrity and Entertainment Outreach for the American Red Cross National Headquarters says, "Entertainment Tonight has been a tremendous partner in mobilizing the entertainment community following major domestic and international disasters. Those with a public voice have the power to use it to help others and we are deeply appreciative of their generosity." http://www.etonline.com/news/2010/01/83098/ | |
