- Was there something in the water? The air? The fish tacos? Whether it was environmental or just coincidental, San Diego has had one whopper of a pop-culture year.
From the highs of Adam Lambert’s “American Idol” achievements to the lows of the Tiger Woods mistress scandal, San Diego was connected to some of 2009’s most buzzworthy stories, whether we wanted to be or not. Dallas may have swiped our title as America’s eighth-largest city, but was Dallas the home of Sarah Palin’s ghostwriter and the birthplace of Michael Jackson’s baby? We think not.
Of course, it’s not the first time we have made our mark in the land of pomp and craziness. As home to both the first defrocked reality-show contestant (“Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire?” phony Rick Rockwell) and one of the worst films in movie history (“Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!”), San Diego has a rich history of dubious media achievements. But this year’s mixed bag was more overstuffed than usual.
Two “Amazing Race” winners. One box-office champion. Reality TV’s freakiest office. Here’s a look at some of the people, places and phenomena that gave San Diego a sliver of the spotlight in 2009:
Adam Lambert
The Mt. Carmel High School graduate lost this year’s “American Idol” crown to Kris Allen, but he hit the buzz jackpot anyway. After bringing his guyliner and black nail polish to the covers of Entertainment Weekly and Rolling Stone, Lambert gave an outrageous performance at the American Music Awards that resulted in several canceled television appearances and a spot on Barbara Walters’ “10 Most Fascinating People of 2009” broadcast. His CD, “For Your Entertainment,” debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard album chart. http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2009/dec/26/toast-americas-finest-pop-culture-city/ | |
