- To me, Adam Lambert is like a cross between Elvis, Freddie Mercury, Elton John, David Bowie. So for his album cover and packaging, we found a killer castle (in Yonkers of all places) with an opulent, boudoir kind of vibe. It was the perfect setting for Adam’s eccentric, but contemporary style.
The castle was super fragile, and we couldn't move a thing. It was also very dark, with wood paneling and not many windows, so technically it presented quite a challenge. So I needed to transform the location and make it more of a psychological space than a real place that he was in.
Time was also working against us. The American Idol tour was keeping Adam very busy, so we only had about 8 hours to get everything done. We got off to a late start due to his schedule and shot until about 2am!
To obtain an ethereal light, I used lots of colored gels, giving the images a vibrant, colorful pop.
Spy on Set?
Since Adam’s such a huge superstar, the shoot ended up being huge as well. And unfortunately, not everyone on set was as professional as they should’ve been. I’m not going to name names, but someone took a photo of Adam in hair and makeup and Tweeted it. Virally, it just exploded, and with not very flattering comments either (thanks, Perez Hilton). As far as I’m concerned, these people have no life. But SONY freaked out because of all this negative publicity. But between me and you I think is good because it just creates more of a buzz. And Adam’s finished shots are incredible looking, which is all I really care about.
Despite all the drama, Adam was awesome to work with. And as you can see from the following video, I think he dug me too. http://backstage.warwicksaint.com/2009/11/idolize-this-behind-scenes-with-adam.html | |
