Adam Lambert is clearly already an expert at image manipulation and manufacturing controversy.
The runner-up from last year's season of "American Idol," Lambert has made no secret of the fact that he's gay. Masterfully playing on the country's lingering discomfort with homosexuality, Lambert turned his recent performance at the American Music Awards into a spectacle of boundary-pushing homoerotic innuendo. ABC censoring his televised act provided a tremendous amount of publicity for his just-released debut album, "For Your Entertainment."
Unfortunately, Lambert's music isn't yet as advanced as his ability to shock. The template for the album's sound is laid out in its first three tracks - the glammy metal of "Music Again," the attitudinal boy-band pop of the title track and the plodding hard rock of "Whataya Want from Me." However, Lambert sings like a teen-pop moppet regardless of his song's genre, and his well-scrubbed delivery just can't sell the cuts that aim for sleaze and debauchery. While the album offers an impressive bounty of big, memorable hooks, it's rhythmically lifeless.
Amidst uninspiring stuff like the Queen rip-off "Soaked" and the Daughtry wannabe "Aftermath," Lambert submits one undeniably heart-stopping gem, the glorious "A Loaded Smile." The song starts off in generic smooth-dude R&B territory only to turn into an achingly gorgeous space ballad that's more Thom Yorke than Timberlake. It's definitely worth your 99 cents, and it gives me hope that maybe next time around Lambert will bring the same spirit of risk-taking to his artistry that he's already lent to his media appearances.
