Adam Lambert: 'Idol' Supernova Empty
PostSubject: Adam Lambert: 'Idol' Supernova   Adam Lambert: 'Idol' Supernova Empty25.11.09 23:33

Quote :
Some stars are made and some are born. Adam Lambert, as his legion of "American Idol" followers knows, arrived as a supernova. He burst on to Season 8 of the reality show with an outrageous swagger, confidence and theatricality the likes of which Simon, Paula, Randy and Kara (and the millions of viewers) had certainly never seen before. Ultimately, Lambert finished second behind the more mainstream Kris Allen, and he once again finds himself following Allen: Lambert's major-label debut, "For Your Entertainment," comes out Nov. 23; one week after Allen's self-titled set.

But in many ways Lambert has come out first among all those on "Idol." With his lacquered, jet-black Elvis hair, piercing blue eyes and compelling backstory (he came out shortly after the competition ended), Lambert has already landed on the cover of Rolling Stone, appeared on "20/20," and Out magazine just named him its breakout of the year. And that's all before his glam rock CD, which includes contributions from Lady Gaga, Weezer's Rivers Cuomo, Pink and OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder, even hits the streets.

Spend any time with Lambert and it's clear this is someone who wears fame well. He's a savvy blend of candor, humor, humility and confidence. Lambert, a musical theater veteran of such shows as "Wicked," seems completely sure that the chosen path before him is the right one, but then he'll heartily laugh when asked about the instant stardom thrust upon him, adding: "All I have to say that, there's no handbook to how to do this. It's hilarious. I'm flying by the seat of my pants. I'm just going along for the ride and just try to enjoy it. I don't really know what I'm doing."

Lambert revealed to MSN Music the best rumor he's heard about himself, the one artist he's dying to work with, his biggest career thrill so far, and what he really thinks about his off-the-wall album cover.

MSN Music: What do you want people to learn about you from listening to this album?

Adam Lambert: I want people to realize that I don't always take myself that seriously and that I have a good time, and that music should be fun and delightful and [make you want] to play dress up and feel sexy and flirt and feel good about yourself. There are other tracks on the album that are vulnerable and personal that I wrote from experience and that, hopefully, are an insight to who I am as a person.

How important was it to you that people see you as a songwriter, not just as a singer?

It is really important. Obviously, it adds a lot of credibility to what we do. Doing musicals onstage is great, but I have nothing to do with the actual writing of it or the choices that were being made. I really wanted to have my own art and something that I could interpret at will. When you write your own song, it's like "This is me. This is Adam. This is not some character that I'm playing."

Even before your first non-"AI" single came out, you were on the cover of Rolling Stone, on "20/20" and in Details posing with a naked woman.

[Lambert laughs.] Too much too soon?

I really think you grab it while you can. I've been lucky. I really do feel that way because I know that I'm a little left of center. I know that I'm not the typical "Idol' contestant. I know that I'm not a typical contemporary artist as well. I know I'm an acquired taste. And, yeah, it is fast, it is a little overwhelming at times, but I kind of think you need to be that way in today's entertainment scene to hold people's attention.

You recently tweeted to fellow artist/songwriter Ferras that the tabloids had printed that you were dating. How do you deal with it being open season on your personal life?

Ferras and I -- I've known him for a couple of years ... I became recently single and I was hanging out with him and a bunch of other friends and, of course, the conclusion was jumped to that now we're together. Which is based on nothing ... He tweeted back a response that science had found a way for him to be impregnated with my child. I guarantee you there was probably some sort of tabloid somewhere that printed that "fact."

What's the strangest rumor that you've heard about yourself?

There have been a lot of crazy ones. I remember one kind of funny one was that [I] was considering tattooing eye makeup on permanently.

Are you?

I would never ... that would hurt and I wouldn't want it on my eye permanently. That would be silly looking. I want to be able to have control over when I look like a glamour puss and when I'm looking normal.

What did you think when you first heard Lady Gaga's "Fever," which you record on your album.

I thought it was great ... When I heard that she wanted me to record it I almost fell over because she was on the top of my list of people to collaborate with and I'm a huge fan of Lady Gaga. We got together in the studio and she was amazing. We totally clicked and she kind of pushed me. She made it more outrageous. She said, "Do more, make it crazier." And I was like, "OK." We had a really good time that day.

Many people expressed shock over your very kitschy album cover. You later tweeted that it was meant to be deliberately campy. Were you concerned that some people didn't get the joke and, therefore, might not get you?

I think where I was more surprised was that people were surprised. On "Idol," I thought that I kind of was pretty out there, so for me to do something that was out there shouldn't really be a big shock ... I was on the stage with glitter boots and glitter shoulder pads and rhinestones around my eyes and I was doing "Ring of Fire" in leather with fire behind me with eye makeup on. It's not new, it's just a really, really glamorous alien, rock star picture, you know. Whateva ...

What's been your biggest "pinch me" moment?

When I was onstage with Queen that was pretty intense, on national television. Brian May and Roger Taylor and Kris Allen and it was completely surreal and an honor ... Queen is one of the first introductions to classic rock that I had. Listening to Freddie Mercury sing was like, "Ooh, I want to do that" ... so just being onstage with them was just full circle. Here I am.

Brian May and Roger Taylor told the BBC today that they really want you to work with them.

I would love to work with them. I would loooove to work with them. Timing is everything. Let's see where we're at after this album comes out and after I've done what I need to do to support it, you know.

Who did you not to work with on this album that you wanted to?

There's an artist named Nikka Costa that we were kind of talking with and it didn't pan out this time, but there's definitely a lot of interest and I love her ... I've seen her live a couple of times in LA. There's hardly a female artist who can hold a candle to her; I mean she can really outperform all of them.

You have tweeted some very supportive comments about Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta and some of your fellow "American Idol" contestants. Do you feel like there are very few people who understand what it's like to go through this rabbit hole?

Yes, the rabbit hole, that's precisely what it is. We identify with each other. We were all there from the beginning of the experience together. It's a big family.

But is it a big family whose members you want to make sure you beat on the music charts?

[Laughs and pauses.] I've never really thought of it that way. I think I'm just going to do my record. I don't really feel like I'm in competition with them. I think we're all just kind of doing our thing but we're so different, all of us, it's apples and oranges.

You've already learned to be diplomatic.

(Laughs.) It's important.
