Adam Lambert could have what it takes

Quote :
There should be a "best-before" stamp on Idol finalists.

They have a year to make it and then they're on their own. The dream is over. The real work begins.

Adam Lambert, who sold out both his casino appearances, Thursday at Red Robinson's and Friday night at the River Rock, appears to have the werewithal to last longer and will be around for a while. A finalist during American Idol's eighth season, he seems to know what he faces and is poised, no doubt, for what comes after his year of fame.

Lambert has worked on his imagery and has benefited from a willingness to take risks. He's taking advantage of controversy and has balanced that with a background in musical theatre. Thus, he knew before undertaking these first two shows that people already knew a little about him, enough to be ardent fans, and already was aware of showmanship.

What he didn't know was what direction to go in, so Friday was like a test. Lambert was testing the audience while the audience was taking the measure of him. He was finding out what works, finding out more about himself, finding out who the Adam Lambert audience is. Thus, don't be surprised if the next tour has more focus and is less diverse than the show he gave here.

Starting with a pose evidently borrowed from Michael Jackson, Lambert and a four-piece band launched into the title track from his album, For Your Entertainment, and for the next hour tried out-dance rhythms, 70s-influenced rock, big, dramatic balladry a la Judy-Garland-meets-Whitney-Houston and an acoustic interlude. Not everything worked — for instance, he couldn't do much with Tears For Fears' "Mad World" though he tried hard. As Lambert has only one album, he's limited by what he can do but, bless his sparkling Queen T-shirt, the show makes the most of it.

From Vancouver, Elias filled up their half hour with an earnest rock that was more raw than it's smooth-sounding records, which invariably draw Coldplay comparisons. The band has inventive rhythms and the songs have clever parts and maybe Elias should try leaving in the rough edges when next it records.
